On turbocharged cars water injection can also be used to cool the intake charge and reduce the possibility of detonation, though some engine tuners to frown upon it. Nonetheless, water has a very high specific heat capacity, which means it can absorb a lot of heat energy without a significant increase in temperature. As a result, water injection systems have been around in one form or the other since 1936 and were used on a variety of aircraft engines during World War II. However, water injection is only required if you’re running high boost of more than 12 psi, and should be used in conjunction with a good intercooler.

The water injection system basically consists of a storage tank, a water injector, which is similar to a fuel injector, a high pressure pump, a pressure sensor connected to the intake manifold, and an intake air temperature sensor. Calling it water injection is possibly inaccurate as it can wither be pure water, preferably distilled water, or a mixture of water and methanol. Either way, atomized liquid is usually injected into the intake system when the intake air temperature is exceeding a certain value and the engine is on boost and is usually injected down stream of the intercooler.

On cars turbo water injection can also be used to cool the intake charge and reduce the possibility of detonation, though some engine tuners frown on that. However, water has a specific heat capacity very high, which means it can absorb large amounts of heat without a significant increase in temperature. Consequently, the water injection systems have been around in one form or another since 1936 and has been used in a number of aircraft engines during World War II. However, water injection is only necessary if you run high strength exceeding 12 psi, and should be used in conjunction with a good intercooler.

The water injection system is essentially a storage tank, a water injector, which is similar to a fuel injector, a high pressure pump, a pressure sensor connected to the intake manifold, a temperature sensor and input air. Description of water injection may be inaccurate, since they can fade pure water, distilled water or a mixture of water and methanol. Anyway, the atomized liquid is usually injected into the intake system when the inlet air temperature is above a certain value and the engine is up and is usually injected downstream of the exchanger.

HOW WATER INJECTION

Splash, rather, that the water spray is injected into the intake system of water just boiling 212 ° F at sea level when the temperature of the intake charge should be much lower, which has already passed through the intercooler. When water is injected into the air intake system, it absorbs very little heat supply fee. When a spray droplets with a charge inlet, the combustion chamber at high temperature causes the combustion chamber of atomized water to evaporate. During the process of spraying a lot of heat energy is absorbed, which is responsible for the intake air temperature anther bill! Unfortunately, the vaporized water to move a lot, which was filled with air molecules, but it reduced the temperature of the combustion chamber more than compensate for the loss of that amount.

WATER AND METHANOL

Some tuners prefer injected engine a mixture of water and methanol in the intake system. Overall, 50% methanol by weight is used. This allows the elimination of detonation while providing maximum power desired. Methanol is both hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water and miscible, which means that mixes well with water. It is also much more volatile than water, meaning it evaporates faster. This further reduces the vaporization temperature of the intake charge, but is removed before the combustion chamber is achieved. Once the combustion chamber is reached, the water droplets atomized spray if temperatures are further reduced in the combustion chamber. However, methanol is a fuel and therefore provides extra power as well.

DISADVANTAGES OF WATER INJECTION

There are some disadvantages of using water injection system, some of which can be catastrophic! First of all, that your water injection system would mean a total lack of explosion suppression systems, which can quickly lead to engine failure! To avoid this situation, you need a redundant system that reduces engine power when the temperature of the charge intake downstream of the injector, the water reaches a certain threshold. Secondly, the minerals in tap water rapidly clog the injector of water, and lead to failure to provide the right amount of water. It is therefore advisable to use distilled water in your water injection system. As with any other system, you must ensure that only quality pipes and fittings are used to allow the system reliability of water injection.

Finally, determining the amount of water injected can be quite difficult, because you do not want high boost pressure to oppression too little bang! The surest way to achieve the right amount of water injection for a particular application is to start with a lower pressure to stimulate and slowly increase the boost pressure. If detonation occurs, the back and instantly increase water injection, if a significant boost pressure is required.

Yes, lowering the temperature of the combustion chamber can run more pressure increase and thus makes us more power!
